Good Game Well Played
Good Game Well Played
Mini open world local multiplayer experience at documenta fifteen
2022

Good Game Well Played is a mini open world local multiplayer experience with various narrative elements and playful interactions for up to four players. All players use the same keyboard to explore themes of collectivity and community through narrative elements and playful interactions in a 2D world. All avatars are exchangeable and can be shared by all players. All characters, artworks, rules, sounds and texts were made in participatory work/playshop format with artists of documenta fifteen and students of Kunsthochschule Kassel from the 3rd until the 7th of July 2022.
Based around the idea of a Game Jam informed by the lumbung values of documenta fifteen we got together for spontaneous gamemaking. We worked in a limited frame of time and without striving for polished results. Instead everyone contributed what they could and wanted, without preparation or planning in advance. Exploring questions of common game jam working conditions, and the relation of role of play and playful productivity.
The title Good Game Well Played is taken from competitive online gaming jargon and references De Koven’s book The Well Played Game, where he develops the idea of the play community and the adaptation of rules during play to meet the needs of all players.
